international graduate student ministry winter retreat 2011 150x150 IGSM Winter Retreat 2011 PhotosWe had a blessed time up in the Sierra’s having fun in the snow, eating some great food (thanks Praxis brothers and sisters) and feasted on a banquet of God’s spiritual word and blessing through Pastor William. Pastor William shared openly from his own life to help us to see the truth of God, our sins and the great salvation that we are all offered. We were all greatly blessed by Pastor William’s messages as well as testimonies from various brothers and sisters. If you missed out this year, hope you can join us next year.

Friday Forum Podcast — The Parable of the Sower (1/14/11)

podcast sq Friday Forum Podcast The Parable of the Sower (1/14/11)In preparation of the IGSM Winter Retreat, Chul Kim provided a discussion of the parable of the sower as written in Matthew 13:1-23.  He considers the parable, which is a representative story given by Jesus to those who are listening, and the explanation that Jesus later provides for this particular parable.  In this parable is a man who sows seeds, which represent the Word of God, and the four types of soil that the seeds can fall upon, which represent four different ways a person can respond to the Word.  From the seed that falls on the path, Chul discusses the importance of being able to listen, and listen carefully, to the Word that it may have the authority to change our lives.  From the seed that falls on the rocky soil, Chul emphasizes the difficulties of living in the Word, and the importance of recognizing this.  From the seed that falls among the weeds, Chul speaks of the difficulties that Christian have to face daily, and have to overcome.  Ultimately those who can do so are like the seed that falls on the good soil.  The evening ends with a testimony from Nghia Tran, and how his life was transformed by the Word.

IGSM Retreat Recap (part 1)

We had a wonderful time last weekend at the Sierra Lodge for our IGSM Annual Retreat.  It’s taken me a week to recover from the very packed time that we had over those 2 days, but it was a really memorable time.

Dr. Zhu gave three messages in Chinese: “Be Wholly”, “Be Real”, and “Be Wise”.  A brief recap of the three: in Be Wholly, he talked about his personal journey and how he had experienced tough times in his personal life.  And yet it was meeting Jesus that made him whole and brought such joy to his life, changing him forever.  In Be Real, Dr. Zhu talked about how we miss out on the big picture of life and reality because we get so focused on our present issues: research, publishing, school, and daily life.  As a result, we don’t see the world around us, which is so much bigger, and should make us more humble.  Finally, in Be Wise, he talked about how true wisdom comes from knowing God, not knowing more information.

Dr. Zhu was born in Jiangsu, China and received his B.S. in Chemistry from Nanjing University.  He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, in Food Science and Nutrition in 1993.  It was during this time that he became a Christian and was baptized at Amherst Chinese Christian Church.  He furthered his Christian training at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, a well-regarded Bible Institute.  After completing his studies, he was a Senior Research Scientist at Viva Life Science in Costa Mesa, CA, where he published a research paper in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry.

Winter Retreat with Gracepoint

Many of us started the new year by going to a retreat (an extended time away from our normal surroundings to study the Bible) with Gracepoint Berkeley church at the Mount Hermon Retreat Site. Over one weekend we listened to thought provoking Bible messages from the examples of people in the Bible such as Saul, Samson, the Rich Young Man, and Pilate. Older ones from the church also shared about their personal journey with God and how the Bible verses guided them at each step as they studied and struggled to live based on them. Many of us were challenged and encouraged to grow in vision and believe the promises of God, just like the ones he gave to Abraham.
