Photo Scavenger Hunt

4018979369 cb492de6c6 m Photo Scavenger HuntIf you’ve been to Friday Bible Studies you know that our post bible study activities are limited to Barrows Hall.  We have had trips to Fenton’s or SF but that’s a rare treat. Two weeks ago we decided it was time for a change. We divided into teams and ran out, literally, into the night for our very first photo scavenger hunt!

Ok so what exactly is a photo scavenger hunt, you ask?

The scavenger hunt is basically a game where people, either individuals or teams, are given a list of items or activities they have to do (all free things) to accomplish. Whoever comes back first or within the allotted time wins. Except in our case, people were given a list of places to find on campus and take photographs as a team…some of the pictures turned out to be hilarious. Here are some of the highlights. GSWN 3 – Recap

3918834458 53c120d04d m GSWN 3 Recap For the third part of the Connect series, we filled up  110 Barrows Hall, the room we will use for the rest of the semester. I was personally very surprised to see the hallway outside filled with people, pizza, and conversation- and all before 6:30pm. We started by watching our first video about Peter and the lab experiment and then an awesome video about a grad students fluctuating self-worth as he interacts and compares himself with the people around him. Dr. Chul Kim gave a message along the same lines about how we view people in our lives.  You can listen to it here:

GSWN Part 1 – Recap

3868086705 e5e055ea9f m GSWN Part 1 RecapThe long awaited Graduate Student Welcome Nights (Part I) finally took place on Friday, August 28, at Lipman Room (Barrows Hall, 8th floor). At the event, we had well over 100 attendees, who came from many different countries: Turkey, France, Germany, Korea, China, Iran, India, Greece, and right here in the U.S.

As life, namely stress and busyness, was the main topic of the night, we began with a fun game called “Stress Test.” Through this test, we realized that most graduate students experience stress in very similar ways. Does that count as “great minds stress alike”?

After the game, Dr. Chul gave us a very insightful message about the stressful life of graduate students. The unending cycle of work, stress, fun was particularly memorable because it summarizes the lifestyle of graduate students very well. You can listen to the entire message here:

Graduate Student Welcome Nights 2009 (Part 2)

September 4, 2009
6:30 pmto9:30 pm

We had a great turnout in the first of the three Welcome Night series. We are thankful to meet so many new international graduate students and had a lot of fun time with them, doing the stress test and playing games at the Underhill Field. Please see the pictures of that night below.

We are very excited about the next two welcome nights (9/4 and 9/11) as we continue to listen to Dr. Chul Kim, a professor at CSUEB, about how to perceive success and relationships in graduate school. We will also have a skit and a special video in the next two welcome nights, making each one of them uniquely special.

GSWN 2 – Friday 9/4 @ 6:30pm – Barrows Hall, 8th floor (Lipman Room)
GSWN 3 – Friday 9/11 @ 6:30pm – 110 Barrows Hall

So,don’t miss it!

How do I find good Chinese food in Berkeley?

This is the most common question I hear from most Chinese students who quickly realize that I-House food will not meet their expectations for an entire year.  The list I am about to publish is my opinion only–I cannot guarantee that you will like these restaurants.  That being said, we at International Graduate Student Ministry wanted to help you find Chinese restaurants that you will actually like eating at.  If you drive to Fremont/Milpitas/South Bay, then you will find plenty of good Chinese food.  However, we wanted this list to be relevant and have restaurants closer to the Berkeley campus.

I-House Resource Fair for Berkeley International Students

3839702793 4b9d15e309 m I House Resource Fair for Berkeley International StudentsWe participated in the I-House Resource Fair on 8/19 at 2-4pm to meet and welcome the new batch of Berkeley international graduate students. There were a number of tables there to provide services and information to the students. I appreciate this annual Resource Fair hosted by the International House because it provides a one-stop shop for all the international students to know what kind of resources are around them. We set up our welcome table with our new banner and picture boards at this event, too. We also showcased our new torpedo pens that have our new group name “IGSM” and domain name “www.igsmonline.org” on them.

3839703439 6e16dfbc10 m I House Resource Fair for Berkeley International StudentsAs you can see from the picture on the left, a lot of students came to this event and looked for information that could help them settle on this campus. We gave them our English Class and Graduate Student Welcome Nights flyers. Many students took interests in the English class. Our English Class instructor, Carolyn, was right there to meet the new students and answered their questions.  Many of the IGSM students also helped out with tabling and flyering at this event, meeting new students and sharing their experience at Cal.

If you are a new graduate students and would like to receive help with settling in on this campus, please feel free to contact us.
