For the fourth part of this Friday message series, Chul Kim considers the time when Jesus fed more than five thousand people and then walked on water that night, as written in John 6:1-21 and Mark 6.  When Jesus saw the crowds following him to a remote place, he saw that they were lost and needed direction, and he gave them instruction.  Likewise people today are invited to learn from Jesus the instructions for how to live.  And when the crowds were hungry, Jesus was able to use a small boy’s loaves of bread and fish to feed the crowd.  Likewise, we are called to give the little we have in trust to Jesus, and know that he can multiply it to enough.  The disciples were told by Jesus to go across the lake, but met rough waves and wind along the way, and we also can meet difficult times though we follow Jesus.  However, if we act in the way Jesus calls us, and hold on, Jesus will come to help us.

In part II of this message series, Chul Kim provides responses to some of the questions that the audience asked last week about Christianity in general and the text–questions ranging from the meaning of the term “Lamb of God” to the concept of repentence.  From here Chul discussed the power of the Holy Spirit, and what it means for Jesus to be characterized as one who baptizes with the Spirit.  After considering the origins of the first disciples and the question of “What do you want?”, Chul discusses the situation in which Jesus changes water into wine.  As the supplies of wine ran out at the celebration, so the resources of our lives eventually run short.  But given some willing servants, Jesus is able to refill the supply with even better wine than before.

We reserved the Sierra Lodge, our house in the beautiful Sierra Nevada Mountains for an overnight trip full of fun, relaxing time. We will be going kayaking (weather permitting) at a lake nearby.  We will be leaving for the lodge right after Bible Study on Fri. Oct 29 at 8pm.

–Things to bring: personal toiletries, towel, change of clothing (will get wet with kayaking), sandals, warm jacket for evening.

As he prepares to return to China, Max provides a special testimony describing his discovery of Christianity during his time at Berkeley.  After this, Chul Kim discusses the idea of sin, and the source of sin in our lives.  Through an analysis of the fall of Adam and Eve, Chul describes the way temptation can twist our thoughts and make sin attractive.  He describes how sin creates a barrier between in our relationship with God, and in our relationships in general.  As a consequence, we are separated from the source of life.  Though we try to cover ourselves, we are ultimately brought to death.  But God provides a solution, the church, which is a community to which all of us are invited to regain the relationships that have been lost.

Last Friday we had our second sports night of the year at Maxwell Family Field! We were joined by the Visiting Scholars Ministry and we split into six teams and played our classic staple of games: Wild Turkey, Ultimate Frisbee, and soccer. It was certainly a relief for us to get some exercise after a busy week of research and coursework. The mental fatigue didn’t show on our faces though, as everyone was going all-out in the games and having a good time with rocking music playing in the background.

After the games, we took a big group picture around the Cal logo on the field and then we enjoyed watermelon and sago pudding up in the parking lot. That was definitely my highlight of the week–I’m already looking forward to the next sports night! Hope you guys had fun too!

Following a performance of Jadon Lavik’s song “Searching” by our very own praise band, we headed out to the City by the Bay, San Francisco, for a night of sight-seeing and, of course, yummy sweets at Ghirardelli Square! Those of us who were daring enough took on the famous “Earthquake” with the help of many friends. It was a packed evening, to say the least.

We’re so thankful for all the graduate students who joined us for the welcome nights! Hopefully as the semester progresses and school gets into high gear, we’ll still continue to have moments like these!

Afterward, we listened to a message by Chul where he talked “About Life,” evaluating what it means to really live life. What makes it worth living, and where does this desire come from? If you weren’t able to hear the message, check out the podcast. Following the message, we had a fun time of rousing group games. The exciting finish came when we were asked to build the tallest possible tower with all of the items we had on us, including shoes, backpacks, paper and anything else we could find.
