IGSM Tabling
When you last walked down Sproul Plaza on the south side or when you enter through those two pillars at the North Gate, did you notice something different there? Did you see some very cheerful faces with a handful of flyers that resemble iPhones? Did you see a table that has big white capital letters with black background? That’s us! Please feel free to drop by our table on Sproul Plaza or at the North Gate to say “hi” to us.
Graduate Student Welcome Night Trailer
I can’t believe we are less than 5 days away from the first Graduate Student Welcome Night. I am pretty excited about it. Last night we had a worknight to work on the various different aspects of the GSWN for this Friday, such as equipment, food lists, special music and skit. I hope that you will be able to join us this Friday 8/28 at 5:30pm at the Barrows Hall 8th Floor (aka “Lipman Room”). Go to the announcement for Graduate Student Welcome Night for more information. Well hope to see you this Friday. Till then check out this trailer.
International Graduate Student Welcome Nights Flyer
To increase the publicity of the Graduate Student Welcome Nights on the Berkeley campus, we started to pass out the newly designed flyers to the graduate students on campus. The publication team (also known as the infrastructure group) uses the iPhone layout for the backdrop. A table view is used to display the three-part message series: Connect Life, Connect Future, and Connect People. The tab bar items on the bottom highlight the special components of each welcome night, which include message, free food, video, and music.
If you have not gotten a flyer from us, you can contact us for one. Or, look for our table at the I-House Resource Fair on 8/19. We will also have our table at the Sproul Plaza on the Southside of campus and at the North Gate during UC Berkeley’s Welcome Week.
First Graduate Student Welcome Night – August 28
I hope you are looking forward to the first in a series IGSM Graduate Student Welcome Night, which will be on Friday Aug 28, 2009 starting at 5:30pm (Note: we postponed the first GSWN one week – it was originally Aug 21, 2009). The location will be the Lipman Room (the top floor of Barrows Hall) [click for directions].
Hope you can join us. We will have dinner, message and a special video. Afterwards, we will go to Underhill field to engage in some sports.
Kickoff for Welcome Prep for International Berkeley Graduate Students
After our home church services on Sunday (8/9), the International Graduate Student Ministry staff and students (a total of 30 some people) got together at the YWCA to prepare for all the upcoming welcome events for the incoming international graduate students. We broke up into smaller working units, which we call the infrastructure groups, to take care of an array of tasks including: planning out publicity activities, creating a new banner, retooling the website, discussing the messages for the welcome nights, and many more. The work is not done yet, so I will have more updates to come.

Come and join us!
Below are some pictures of the Graduate Student Welcome Night last year.
GSWN was a blast!
For those of you who missed our Graduate Student Welcome Night, I wanted to fill you in on what happened. The night was a lot of fun, and we got to meet many new friends who were graduate students and visiting scholars. In fact, there were 130+ people there that night! Which makes this event our biggest GSWN ever.
Jisup introduced a brand new icebreaker game to ISM as well: table boxing. Its not the same as table tennis. But you do get to wear gloves… oven mitts to be exact. In this hilarious game, each table is trying to open a gift wrapped box. But only 1 person at a time is allowed to do so, and that person has to wear oven mitts. It was a lot of laughs! And for the lucky winners (which happened to be my table), the prize was DVDs from Gracepoint Fellowship Church’s “Gracepoint Live” production. We also played a game called “That’s Not Funny”… but I won’t spoil it because we may be playing this one again some time soon!
We also had an interesting skit about 4 graduate students at an airport. Josiah played the guy who was just going to graduate school, but didn’t know what he wanted to do. We had Mr. Boogle show up again… Changcheng reprised his role from last year. Mr. Boogle is the guy who wants to network and build a global empire: but needs grad school training. Frederik did an amazing job as the environmentalist, with a stern face that we normally don’t see on him. And finally, Yiguang played the cool guy looking for romance, and the girl of his dreams in graduate school. And the ending says it all for everyone in graduate school: “I’ll find it… when I get there.” Well, we at ISM hope that you can find what you’re looking for right here.
We then had a 30 minute Bible study from Chul about the call of Abraham in Genesis 12, where we got to learn that success in God’s eyes is to become a blessing to others. The final piece of the program was a special song from our newly minted ISM band. But for now, it’s only a 1 time performance… we hope to see them back soon. In case you can’t tell, that’s Howard on keyboard, Tony on guitar, Jon on bass, and Eliah on drums.
If you missed it this year, we have another Graduate Student Welcome Night coming up… but not until next year.
Graduate Student Welcome Night 08 Message
We kicked off our semester series on Abraham’s Journey at our Graduate Student Welcome Night. In the call of Abraham by God, we see something counterintuitive: God blesses Abraham so that he can be a source of blessing to the nations. We often think that our personal happiness is the most important thing in life. But from the Bible, we see that blessing really isn’t about our own self-centered agendas—it’s all about being a source of blessing to others around us. That’s how God made us to be.

New Student Welcome Night
It’s that time of year again that we at Gracepoint Berkeley gear up for New Student Welcome Night. Many of you know that ISM is hosting Graduate Student Welcome Night, which is ISM’s biggest event of the year. What you might not know is that ISM’s undergraduate partners in ministry (Acts2Fellowship, Kairos, and Koinonia) are hosting two New Student Welcome Nights at Pauley Ballroom on campus. For those of you who see our flyer and think, “I don’t really want to go to Graduate Student Welcome Night because I am still an undergrad”, this is the place for you. (In fact, Kairos 3 is headed up by ISM alumni and is geared for international undergraduate students!)
Check out the New Student Welcome Night website if you have a chance! For those of you who are undergraduate students, we highly recommend these events. And for those of us who are a little older, we hope to see you on Friday!
