Here is the first video that we made for IGSM for the 2004 Graduate Student Welcome Night. Hope none of you ever get an email from your adviser asking you to work on something that is due the next morning. The laboratory scenes are pretty cool. You didn’t think labs can be so awesome right? And wow, what is the Van Dyke method? Well hope you enjoy it.
Don’t forget to leave a comment about how you liked the video. Do you have a secret bin to help you out in a bind? Hope to see you this Friday.
For the third part of the Connect series, we filled up 110 Barrows Hall, the room we will use for the rest of the semester. I was personally very surprised to see the hallway outside filled with people, pizza, and conversation- and all before 6:30pm. We started by watching our first video about Peter and the lab experiment and then an awesome video about a grad students fluctuating self-worth as he interacts and compares himself with the people around him. Dr. Chul Kim gave a message along the same lines about how we view people in our lives. You can listen to it here:
Here is the video that we saw this past Friday at the Graduate Student Welcome Night. We made this video for 2006 and 2007 Graduate Student Welcome Nights. Don’t you think Jesse looks so young in this video? And Shufei and Karen are just so cool looking especially as they execute their secret operation to take the paper from Jungmo – poor Jungmo didn’t have a chance. Click Read More to view the video.
By the way, just in case you are wondering, the video mentions ISM several times. In 2009, we changed our name from ISM to IGSM (adding graduate to international student ministry) because we found out that there is another group named ISM and since they came first, we wanted to respect that. Also, adding graduate student really reflects the make up of our group. Anyways, hope you enjoy the video and see you this Friday for the third and final Graduate Student Welcome Night (hint there will be another video).
Don’t forget to leave your comments on what you thought about the video.
I hope you guys enjoyed the past two Graduate Student Welcome Nights. Now, the moment that everybody has been waiting for (or I think many have been waiting for this) – the posting of the GSWN Welcome Night Video. Today, we will post this year’s GSWN video – Graduate Student Life.
It is a video about some of the funny moments of graduate student life. Learn what some of the interesting habits of graduate students such as how they great each other, practical skills they learn and most importantly how to deal with those pesky undergrads
Hope you enjoy the video and hope to see you at the third and Final Graduate Student Welcome Night this Friday at 6:30pm. Click on Read More to see the video.
Don’t forget to leave a comment. Tell us what you thought about the video. Does this video capture graduate student life? Also don’t forget to come back tomorrow to see the video that we saw last week (you know the Secret Agent one).
The excitement of receiving and welcoming new international graduate students continued in Part 2 of our Graduate Student Welcome Night series. Although the stress of school has begun to mount for some of our students, many of the new friends managed to join us again for the second Welcome Night. We also met many new friends. We once again packed Lipman Room with about 100 attendees. Continue reading

Once again, we are thankful to meet so many new friends at our second Graduate Student Welcome Night. Our last installment of the three-part Welcome Night series is coming up on 9/11. Professor Chul Kim will wrap up his message series, Connect, with the final topic on how to connect with people in graduate school. A special video will be presented in this Welcome Night.
Friday 9/11 @ 6:30pm – 110 Barrows Hall
We look forward to seeing you there!
The long awaited Graduate Student Welcome Nights (Part I) finally took place on Friday, August 28, at Lipman Room (Barrows Hall, 8th floor). At the event, we had well over 100 attendees, who came from many different countries: Turkey, France, Germany, Korea, China, Iran, India, Greece, and right here in the U.S.
As life, namely stress and busyness, was the main topic of the night, we began with a fun game called “Stress Test.” Through this test, we realized that most graduate students experience stress in very similar ways. Does that count as “great minds stress alike”?
After the game, Dr. Chul gave us a very insightful message about the stressful life of graduate students. The unending cycle of work, stress, fun was particularly memorable because it summarizes the lifestyle of graduate students very well. You can listen to the entire message here:

We had a great turnout in the first of the three Welcome Night series. We are thankful to meet so many new international graduate students and had a lot of fun time with them, doing the stress test and playing games at the Underhill Field. Please see the pictures of that night below.
We are very excited about the next two welcome nights (9/4 and 9/11) as we continue to listen to Dr. Chul Kim, a professor at CSUEB, about how to perceive success and relationships in graduate school. We will also have a skit and a special video in the next two welcome nights, making each one of them uniquely special.
