Following a performance of Jadon Lavik’s song “Searching” by our very own praise band, we headed out to the City by the Bay, San Francisco, for a night of sight-seeing and, of course, yummy sweets at Ghirardelli Square! Those of us who were daring enough took on the famous “Earthquake” with the help of many friends. It was a packed evening, to say the least.

We’re so thankful for all the graduate students who joined us for the welcome nights! Hopefully as the semester progresses and school gets into high gear, we’ll still continue to have moments like these!

Afterward, we listened to a message by Chul where he talked “About Life,” evaluating what it means to really live life. What makes it worth living, and where does this desire come from? If you weren’t able to hear the message, check out the podcast. Following the message, we had a fun time of rousing group games. The exciting finish came when we were asked to build the tallest possible tower with all of the items we had on us, including shoes, backpacks, paper and anything else we could find.

We started off the night with some scrumptious Hawaiian BBQ and we nearly ran out of food because it was so good! Then we had a re-run of the previous year’s Grad Student Welcome Night Video featuring YouTube videos of grad student life. We’ll be having a new video this coming Friday, and I hear that it involves a mysterious pen and lots of Ramen noodles (sorry, that’s all I can say about it–come to GSWN #2 to see the whole thing). After the video, Chul gave a talk about the importance of having a foundation for our lives, and we heard different testimonials from past and present IGSM students talk about how they came to accept Christianity as the foundation for their lives. It was really good and some people said that the message was the highlight of the evening!

Finally, we had our IGSM Sports Night at Underhill Field, where we played soccer (a.k.a. football in every other country besides the U.S.), ultimate Frisbee, and Wild Turkey. It was truly an exciting and action-packed night as we started off the games with team cheers. I personally liked the Team 3 cheer where they swarmed around the other groups. Anyways, we had a grand time and many of us stayed around and were hanging out by Underhill even after they turned off the lights. I heard that someone said that Grad Student Welcome Night was their best night since coming to Berkeley! If that’s the case, then you won’t want to miss Grad Student Welcome Night #2!
