This past Friday we had our first Graduate Student Welcome Night, and oh what a night it was! There were over 140 people in attendance and we had students from many countries including far east Japan, gregarious Germany, “Be the Reds” South Korea, the Pacific Ocean Philippines, valiant Vietnam, terrific Taiwan, and of course, the ever-so-populated country of China. It was nice to see so many grad students (and undergrads too!), many of whom had been in the U.S. for less than 1 month. Continue reading

The Truth Project – History
After two weeks of discussing about Science, we will move onto our next tour. On this tour we will set up the fourth and final pillar in the Temple of Truth – History – and take a close look at the importance of maintaining a firm grip on the past. In the process, we will see that a proper appreciation of historical context – in other words, our place in God’s “larger story” – is fundamental to an accurate understanding of almost every aspect of our lives. History provides us with indispensable insights into the meaning of existence, God’s plan and purpose for the ages, man’s responsibility toward the Creator, and his duty toward his fellow creatures. The word “remember” is central to the message of this episode.

Resuming The Truth Project
After the special Home Worship led by Chul (Home Church 1) and Thomas (Home Church 2) during the July 4th weekend, we will return to The Truth Project series this Sunday to continue the Dr. Tackett’s lecture on Science. It’s going to be 10:30am for both home churches. Again, their locations are:

Frisbee and yogurt after home worship
Last week, we enjoyed our International Student Ministry home worship service of Gracepoint Berkeley. We listened to Del Tackett’s lesson on theology, “Who Is God?” And he challenged us all to be theologians, people who study God, and we can do it through the Bible. We might even be able to say like him in the future, “I love El Qanna”. (which means jealous God)
Afterward, we played a round of ultimate frisbee with both home churches–yes, the Alameda folks actually drove out for the festivities. The team with Jon Yen won–he is a force of nature–but it was a close 5-4 game, and it was a load of fun. We hope to do this regularly. And after running around, we then went out to Yogurtland for customized and yummy frozen yogurt.

Home worship time change to 10:30am
One older member of our church once said, “if you can find us, you can worship with us”. Well, that’s the case here again. We’re changing our time to 10:30am because 10 was just too early for some people. A little later, but that means that we can still have lunch on time and enjoy an afternoon of fellowship with one another.

Just wanted to let you know that we are moving our Home Church time up to 10AM! Yes, its a little earlier, but that means that we can have lunch on time (yay!) and have more time in the afternoon to enjoy the afternoon, play some games, have a chance to play sports, etc.

Graduate Student Welcome Night 2008
Graduate Student Welcome Night was the biggest event of the year! We started with a delicious BBQ dinner, followed by some great music, a fun video, and a thought-provoking message. Did we forget to mention that we had a LOT of fun in the process?
And in case you were wondering what ice breakers we played, the funniest one was called “table boxing”. Imagine trying to open a gift wrapped box while wearing oven mitts. If you can’t, then you can see why this game was hilarious. Many people fumbled with their boxes for a long time.
