The long awaited Graduate Student Welcome Nights (Part I) finally took place on Friday, August 28, at Lipman Room (Barrows Hall, 8th floor). At the event, we had well over 100 attendees, who came from many different countries: Turkey, France, Germany, Korea, China, Iran, India, Greece, and right here in the U.S.
As life, namely stress and busyness, was the main topic of the night, we began with a fun game called “Stress Test.” Through this test, we realized that most graduate students experience stress in very similar ways. Does that count as “great minds stress alike”?
After the game, Dr. Chul gave us a very insightful message about the stressful life of graduate students. The unending cycle of work, stress, fun was particularly memorable because it summarizes the lifestyle of graduate students very well. You can listen to the entire message here:
Dr. Chul shared that there are other more important things than just handling the stress of research in our graduate student lives. And these important things were musically and lyrically communicated by the special song “More to This Life.”
So, having acknowledge that graduate students have stressful life, what did we do to help? To alleviate our graduate students’ stress, we went to the beautiful Underhill Field to play sports and games. We had a fun time playing Human Knot, Ultimate Frisbee, Wild Turkey, and soccer. If you don’t know what these games are, you should definitely join us in the next sports night.
Of course, you don’t have to wait that long for a good time with us. Come next week. The GSWN part 2 will be packed with equally exciting activities.
Time: 6:30pm, September 4th
Place: Lipman Room, Barrows Hall 8th floor
cant wait til the video team posts up the graduate student life video. even after a year, its still funny!
the special song was really moving
also, the lyrics reminded me that there has to be more to this life than just living and dying and going through each day.
Sports Night at Underhill Field was a blast! Once you walk onto the field, the spirit to run around and play quickly grabs you. And Wild Turkey was a hit! There’s nothing like using huge rubber balls to peg people out. Did people enjoy Ultimate Frisbee?
I thought the “stress test” was really fun! I definitely agree w/ “Great minds stress alike”… haha
man karen, i wish i had though of that line.
